Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, celebrated on the third Monday in January, honors the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the civil rights movement. After his assassination on April 4th, 1968, there were calls for a national holiday and beginning in 1970, many states made his birthday, January 15, a holiday. In 1983, Congress passed legislation making the third Monday in January a federal holiday and in 1986, the holiday was first observed nationwide.
