Check out this photo of two nurses taken in the 1940s. At that time the hospital was known as Norman Municipal Hospital. #TBT #tbthursday #Norman
April is #NationalMinorityHealthMonth, a time to raise awareness about health disparities that persist among racial and ethnic minorities. Racial and ethnic discrimination can negatively affect health across lifetimes and generations and policies can play a vital role in improving health outcomes for racial and ethnic minority groups.

Ramadan begins today! Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar which is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. The word “Ramadan” is derived from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground and a decrease of food and drink. Many Muslims abstain from food, drink and certain other activities during daylight hours in Ramadan.
April is #DiversityMonth, a time to recognize and celebrate other cultures and populations. During this month, take time out to celebrate the unique cultures, backgrounds and traditions of others. We can gain a greater appreciation for the diversity that surrounds us all. #CelebrateDiversity
#ArabAmericanHeritageMonth, observed in April, marks a time to reflect on the contributions Arab Americans have made to the U.S. and the diverse group of people who make up the nation's Middle Eastern population. It is an opportunity to enhance understanding of the nuanced and diverse aspects of Arab American heritage. Norman Regional recognizes and celebrates the Arab Americans heritage, culture and contributions.
Today is #WorldAutismAwarenessDay! This is a day in which we celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of people who have autism. “In 2008, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities entered into force, reaffirming the fundamental principle of universal human rights for all. Its purpose is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. It is a vital tool to foster an inclusive and caring society for all and to ensure that all children and adults with autism can lead full and meaningful lives," according to the United Nations' website. Norman Regional celebrates this day in recognition of not only those with autism but those that have become aware and accepting of their similarities and differences.
Every Wednesday in March, we're bringing you a #WomensHistoryWednesday post about an important woman in healthcare. Today, we discuss Betty Ford (1918-2011). She served as the First Lady of the U.S. from 1974-1977. During her time in the White House, she brought attention to women’s health, having had a mastectomy herself. Her open attitude towards breast cancer led to a sharp increase in women getting screened. She also shed light on addiction as a disease by speaking openly about her own struggles. She established the Betty Ford Center for Addiction. Photo courtesy of the Betty Ford Center.

Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE) Awareness Day is this Saturday, March 27. It is a day for our community to join together to acknowledge the impact AFE has on families, healthcare providers, and the community at large. We also honor and remember the lives lost to AFE. Norman Regional remembers one of our healer’s daughter, Jacie Stephens Cochran, who lost her life to AFE last year. Her baby boy survived and is healthy and thriving. We encourage you to learn more about this rare condition and also consider donating blood at our May blood drives in memory of Jacie. #endAFE
